Used Drafting Table
I bought a small used drafting table back a few years ago. I actually wasn't much of an artist at the time. Now I love to draft any kind of creative artwork, but at that point I was more interested in writing. The thing I liked about used drafting tables is that they allowed me space to spread out my work. They were stronger and bigger than most desks, and usually cut out the unnecessary shelves that desks tend to incorporate. I liked the minimalistic design of used drafting tables, and I also liked the price. The particular model that I picked up was only about 80 dollars. Used drafting tables can be quite expensive, but you can find some down to about 30 dollars. I looked at some really cheap used tables, but I wasn't very impressed with how they looked. A used drafting table can get battered and stained If you don't mind this, you can get a great bargain. For me, however, appearance is everything. I spent a little bit of extra money to get something which looked good to me. It was an old-fashioned wood drafting table. I really liked the feel of wood a little bit more than acrylic. The differences are subtle once the table is painted, but it still means something to me to have a table not made with modern, acrylic materials. I like the solidity of wood as well as the durability. It also allowed me to modify the used drafting table very easily. I attached a small cup for my pencils, another organizer for miscellaneous office equipment such as staplers and hole punches, and a small mount for a desk lamp. All in all, I had a nice little setup. Although originally I only used it for writing, it was great to have that used drafting table sitting around when I finally got back into art. I had spent a lot of time when I was a kid drawing on the kitchen table, and so I was surprised by how different the experience was when you had an actual art table. It was nice to be able to incline the table to any angle I wanted, and to know that I wouldn't have to clear it off for dinner. Having a table completely dedicated to your work or your art is important, especially if you want to get really serious about it.
